  • 1451: Born on March 9, 1451, in Florence, Italy.
  • 1491: Sent to Seville, Spain to work for de Medici family. Introduced to the world of voyages and exploration.
  • 1497: Maiden voyage on May 10, 1497, reached the coast of America but thought it was Asia.
  • 1499: Second voyage from Cape Verde, May 16, 1499. Ventured south, beyond the equator to the present day Guyana, and discovered St. Augustine and the Amazon River.
  • 1501: Third voyage from Lisbon on May 14, 1501.
  • 1503: Fourth voyage, he discovered Bahia and the Island of South Georgia and started a trading agency.
  • 1505: Acquired the Spanish citizenship, and married Maria Cerezo.
